My Life Saving Books for Recovery

During much of my life I did not have the insurance or the money to pay for professional counseling, even though I desperately needed it. So I did what many of my friends did - I opted for life saving books as I was going through recovery. I wanted to be healthy and whole!

My library is very special to me. Sometimes I go back and reread a book I read 30 years ago, and it's fresh and new, like I never read it before. Also, during those times of testing and weakness we all experience as we try to live life differently, there always seems to be an appropriate book... if you don't give your books away, that is! I got burned too many times, so I no longer loan my books to anyone. If I can, I'll purchase the book for that person and let them loan it out!

Books are invaluable as you're going through recovery because you can read at your leisure, discuss it with others who either have read it or are reading it now. Also, many recovery groups make a book the focus of their group and study it together.

Many of my books are what I call "classic" books. They just keep selling and selling, and the information in them is timeless. This makes it easy to find them. I urge you to take advantage of life saving books, for your own wholeness! To that end, I am sharing some of my all-time favorite life saving books in these posts.

I wish you health and peace in your soul as you read the posts and decide which ones you will read.

2008 April Lorier

APRIL LORIER - So. California. An award-winning poet, inspirational author and speaker. A survivor of both child abuse and adult domestic abuse, April inspires women to be all that God designed them to be! She first gained recognition as a children's rights crusader while successfully fighting for the passage of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), which was signed into law by Ronald Reagan.

Boundaries - The Book

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries.

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us, mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts, emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own.

Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life is a classic and I highly recommend it. You can purchase it right now by clicking on the link. You'll be helping this ministry with your purchase, too!
